| Filled with muddy, watery action, this picture book will grab young preschoolers with its story about sibling rivalry and elephants in the wild savanna. No matter how hard he tries, Billy the elephant cannot suck up mud and water to spray on himself, and he hates the taunts of his big sister, Bella: “Baby, baby, trunk don’t work! / Baby, baby, trunk don’t squirt!” Mama makes sure he keeps cool, but he wants to be able to bathe himself. The bright, colorful, thickly lined illustrations show the small elephant as part of the big herd, with zebras, warthogs, giraffes, and other animals in the background. There is added drama when lions creep close, but huge Grand Mama elephant scares the predators away. Of course, in the end, Billy does learn to splash himself, as well as his sister (“I can so squirt”), and the blend of scary and playful scenes will have toddlers asking for this story many times over.
