| Starred Review. PreSchool-K—Braun adapts Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale with satisfying results. While many picture-book versions of the story are too long and linguistically dense for young children, this text presents the highlights of the story in a straightforward fashion that preserves the formal feel of the original: "But oh, how large and strange this baby was!… 'No matter,' said Mother Duck. 'I shall love this one just the same.'" The expressive pictures, though rendered with ink and colored pencil, have careful lines and bold edges that give them the feel of woodcuts—an appropriate accompaniment for this timeless tale. The large format, combined with the bright, bold illustrations and simplified language, makes this ideal for storytime sharing. |
