For every mother whose child has refused a kiss or hug when being dropped at school, this story will bring a delighted grin. Jake refuses to hug his mom at the school door because everyone would think he’s a baby. But at the end of a not-so-good day when he does want a hug, his mother says, You didn’t want it so I gave it to Dad. But Dad says he gave it to the cat. The cat gave it to a witch, the witch to a wizard, the wizard to a knight, the knight to a princess, and the princess to a dragon—who gave it back to Jake. And Jake rode home with the knight, princess, and dragon in time for dinner. Charming illustrations escalate each step of Jake’s quest in a cumulative twist on a common childhood rite of passage. Wispy watercolors tuck in clever details (the princess has Rapunzel hair) as they surge toward the playful resolution. A fun book to to help ready children for school. Jake rejects a hug from his mother when she drops him off at school, "Mom!' said Jake. `I don't want a hug. Everyone will think I'm a baby" At the end of a hard school day, he asks his mother for her hug but she tells him that she instead gave the hug to his father. Jake asks his dad, "Where's my hug?" His dad tells him that he gave the hug to the cat and the cat responds that she gave the hug to a witch in exchange for a "tasty fish". The hug keeps being passed on: Who ends up with the hug, and does Jake get it back? This is a cute cumulative patterned story that should appeal to K-3rd grades. The watercolor illustrations are colorful and full of expressive and humorous details. This story with its refrain, "Where's my hug?" could be fun to read-aloud; although, the illustrations probably are best suited for viewing by a small group, or one-on-one.
