| This simple, sunny offering captures the delight and escape a child finds in art. The young, pigtailed speaker is excited about her new box of chalk with its "long perfect sticks / All smooth and dusty." The long driveway is "just waiting," and she settles down to work, drawing a scene that resembles her own world, right down to the orange cat, the white dog, the pink-shirted girl, and the storm clouds that burst and wash the picture into colorful swirls. Rather than feeling disappointed that her artwork is lost, the girl sees new possibilities: "I can draw new pictures. I also have two rainbows—in the sky and at my feet." The words and rhythms read like poetry, but there are no bouncy rhymes to distract from the story's quiet joy. Shapiro effectively mirrors the girl's art with a childlike style and an appealing palette of bright, opaque colors, muted with chalk white.
