Overview / 简介: |
Old Mac's tractor isn't just for getting around the farm. It also pulls a seeder, follows a combine, and even helps him get his animals to the country fair. Along with the bouncy, rhyming text, Don Carter's vivid dimensional art showcases each piece of equipment and includes all of kids' favorite farm animals, providing an irresistible new spin on the beloved song.

PreSchool-Grade 2—Carter's playful take on the classic song is destined to be a storytime hit. A tractor peeks out from behind the barn doors on the title page, and then it's off to work as Old MacDonald takes it out to the fields for plowing, fertilizing, harvesting, and more. The bouncy text follows the pattern of the familiar song, and kids will love the sound effects, like the seed drill's "Pfffft, pfffft." And if some of the text works a little too hard to fit into the expected rhythm ("Smooth it here./Smooth it there./Maybe Old MacDonald/could find a cultivator.../for his hair!"), kids will be too busy giggling at the artwork to notice (e.g., one scene shows the farmer running under his water sprayer in his underwear on a hot day). Carter's uniquely textured illustrations, created from foam board, drywall compound, and acrylic paint, nearly leap off the pages. As an added bonus, different animals appear throughout, enabling the pictures to be used for the traditional verses as well. Add this one to your programming resource shelf.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD

Old Macdonald had a farm, e-i-e-i-o. He had a tractor too and used it all the time. "Work, work here. Work, work there. That old tractor works just about everywhere!" Farm life is busy and hard work and a tractor is a very important piece of machinery. Old MacDonald used it to plow his fields, to cultivate and smooth the fields, to pull a seed drill and plant the seeds . . . "pfffft, pfffft here. Pfffft, pfffft there. Spitting seeds into holes with blasts of air!" Work, work, work.
He used the tractor to pull the sprayer so the fields would stay watered and fertile, it pulled the combine to cut the wheat, it pulled a spreader to fertilize the fields with manure (Pee-hew!) ... "Manure here. Manure there. You can smell it all the way . . . to Delaware!" When it is harvest time, it pulls a harvester to pull up the carrots, it pulls a baler to take in the hay and when the weather begins to cool and it is fair time he pulls a flatbed to pull a cow, a chicken, a sheep and a goose. Old MacDonald's work with the tractor is very hard work and every night he climbs the stairs to go to bed.
This is a charming and accurate story of what a tractor is used for on a farm. The rhyming text is very fun and sing song. Although it does bring to mind the traditional children's song, "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," the reader cannot easily sing the tune with this text. This book can be read alone or easily appreciated and used in a homeschool or classroom setting. If you purchase a small tractor and this book as a gift for your little farmer, he or she will have a grand time imitating Old MacDonald! |
