Donovan's near-wordless story is an animal lover's Christmas wish come true. On Christmas morning, three increasingly large packages from Santa await the pigtailed heroine. Inside them: a cat, a dog, and--hey, we're talking wish fulfillment--a beautiful tan pony. It only gets better as they pile onto her sled, have a snowball fight, and curl up in her bed. Donovan's naturalistic paintings bring out the innate humor of this too-good-to-be-true situation, but also the girl's underlying love of animals. All ages. (Sept.) |

This book begins with a girl writing a letter to Santa. She hasn't finished the letter so we don't see what she's asked for. A few pages later she sees the gifts by the Christmas tree; one small, one medium and one large. When she opens the gifts the small one contains a real cat, the medium one contains a real dog, and the large box houses a real pony. Then we see her play with her new friends in the snow; sledding, making snow angels and snowmen, having a snow ball fight and then curling up by the fire place at the end of the day. The only words in this story are in the letters the girl writes to Santa at the beginning and the end of the book. The illustrations are beautiful and funny at the same time. Great book! |
