Overview / 简介: |
With its humorous approach, fascinating facts, great pictures, and cool projects, there's no better introduction to the often wacky world of weather than this. It covers all the ins and out of how weather works: atmosphere and air pressure; sunshine, rain, storms, and wind; and strange phenomena. Travel the globe to examine different climates and systems. Check out wild weather phenomena, including tornadoes and hurricanes. Keep a weather log, and make a real barometer, thermometer, and wind vane. Every chapter has a "Forecaster's Corner" that children can use to make their own accurate forecasts and a "Weather Challenge" sidebar. All this, and weather lore, quotes, and statistics will get (and keep) kids' attention. |

Gr. 3-6. In an informal, chatty voice, college teacher "Dr. Ed" presents a wealth of meteorological facts to young readers, including information about what causes different kinds of weather, how to build forecasting instruments, and why the seasons change. The casual tone will keep kids reading, and the handsome volume invites browsing. Each double-page spread has lots of bright, colorful diagrams and photos that show a diverse cast of kids having fun in sun, rain, wind, and snow. Readers will also find plenty of boxed insets containing surprising facts ("I didn't know that!") and "Ask the Expert" questions ("Why is snow white?"). In addition, each of the 50 activities has step-by-step directions that take children through everything they'll need to make learning about weather fun. Some of the facts could have been more thoroughly explained, but, especially with the help of a teacher, kids will come away knowing more about a subject that affects them every day. |
