Grade 3-6 - Each of these books tells the story of a particular animal: an African lioness that journeys far to find food for her cubs, a polar bear that wanders into a town and must be airlifted out, a young gorilla whose family is threatened by poachers, and a baby orangutan that is taken from his mother to become a pet. The events unfold movie-style, showing snapshots from the creatures' lives rather than giving a day-by-day account of their existence. The narratives don't shy away from covering the harsher realities of the animal world. For example, Big Cat includes a scene in which a new pride leader kills his predecessor's cubs. These incidents are presented in a matter-of-fact style, but not in gory detail. All of the titles contain some discussion of human contact with the animals and include both positive (conservation efforts) and negative aspects (e.g., encroachment into animal habitats). Some information about species is woven into the texts, and more can be found in the appended "Fact File" sections. Colorful, full-page photos add visual appeal and lend an extra dimension to each title. While these offerings might supplement report material, they will find a more appreciative audience among readers looking for good animal tales. - Arwen Marshall, Minneapolis Public Library |
