Facts can be as exciting––and as weird––as the wildest fantasy, and each double-page spread in this small title is packed with experiments and information about bizarre science, from meteorites and spontaneous combustion to clothes that make you invisible. The design is crowded, with small type printed on color illustrations. But the headlines about strange encounters and out-of-body experiences will hook browsers, and so will the funny discussion of nature’s oddities, as in a passage describing the blobs of purple goop that follow a meteor shower in Texas, for example. Unfortunately, the line between scientific proof, coincidence, and superstition is occasionally blurred, particularly in passages about zombies and vampires. Of course, science must always be open to revision, but conjecture and fact must be separated, whether the subject is UFOs or déjà vu. Still, this provides plenty of fodder for discussion, including the need to keep an open mind; and each spread includes a Web site, directing readers to more awe-inspiring science information.
