reS-Gr 2-Katy, crankily recovering from the flu, and her mother, out of patience, are having a day of clashes. After being told to turn the TV off, the little girl "stomps" upstairs to her room. Suddenly, her mother's old Grandmother Doll talks to her, "-I can't watch TV because I don't have a TV." Katy builds one from a box, crayons, and paper, and the pair look at monster shows together. Next, Katy wants too many cookies. After her mother tells her to stop eating them, she returns to her room. She constructs a stove and the doll bakes chocolate cookies, which the two devour. After the child fusses about going to bed, her companion points out that she doesn't even have a bed, and Katy makes her one. When the child's mother comes in to say good night, she sees the television set and smells the cookies. Leaning over the sleeping Grandmother Doll, she whispers, "At it again?" Cartoonlike ink-and-watercolor illustrations in cross, hot shades of red and yellow splash across the pages, only cooling off to soft purples and blues at bedtime. Simple and spirited, this charming, magical story encourages creative play and links the lives of mother and daughter. |
Foreign Customer Review / 国外客户评价: |
This is a charming book. It also illustrates the little girl solving her boredom by using her imagination. She makes a TV, stove and bed for her Grandmother Doll out of cardboard boxes. Subtle humor for parents as well. My 5 and 6 year old girls love it |
