| PreS-Gr 1–Jack, a wolf, lives alone in the hills. He spends his time making jam and knitting. He is content, but sometimes he does get lonely. One snowy night, Walter the mouse is lost and stumbles upon Jack's house, where he is invited to wait out the storm. The two have a great time together. The following night Jack sleeps poorly because his guest snores. He soon finds himself unreasonably angry and tells the mouse to leave. As Walter departs, Jack regretfully rethinks his decision, hurrying to invite Walter back because having a friend is worth the trouble. This simple story is rendered in bright oil pastels, with thoughtful background details that give the illustrations a cozy feel.
