I got this book for my 3 y.o. son to enhance his understanding of Halloween concepts. The story takes place at a costume party and during trick-or-treating. The illustrations are bright and playful, not spooky or scary; everyone is smiling on the pages. The text is pleasant and humorous, never threatening. When I read the book to him, he is happy, nevered scared and excited to see what the next letter is about.
The author did a nice job with the uncommon letters (eg Q is for quaking, X is for extra-large loot bag), which I find many alphabet books do a bad job of. The only concern (reason for 4 stars) I have about this book is the term use for R, which is 'RIP' and describes/shows a neighbor dressed in a chef costume cutting a tombstone cake with the RIP on it. The picture and text are pretty harmless, but who wants to explain the concept of RIP before they have to. Luckily, my son is too young to really care and I skim over it, but I can see older kids wanting an explanation of the term. R is a pretty common letter - what about R for raven instead next time or something a little less harmless for the little ones? |
