Overview / 简介: |
Gr. 2-4. The dialogue is fast and funny in McKenna's newest book about Gordie and his third-grade classmates, and if some of the characters are stereotypes (especially bossy, bragging Lucy), at least the plot is full of surprising twists and turns. What can be done? The classroom teacher is getting married, and her pupils are afraid they will lose her. Roth's occasional black-and-white pictures show the class, the bus, and all the settings from Gordie's awkward, nervy viewpoint. The farce and the feelings will give this book wide appeal, both as a read-aloud and for personal fun. |

Grade 2-4-In this third book about Gordie, Lucy, and Lamont, the children work together on the class play and follow their teacher's romantic life. Are there wedding bells in her future? The story is told mainly through dialogue and has little descriptive information or character development for readers unfamiliar with the previous books. Of the main characters, the most interesting is Lucy because she is the only one with a personality-albeit a mean one. Most readers are likely to find the story flat and uninteresting. Black-and-white illustrations do little to further the plot in this early chapter book. |

An excellent read! A story about a class of third graders performing a play that their beloved teacher, Ms. Tingle, wrote herself. The character development is exceptional. Lucy is bossy, continually bragging, and wants to be Snow White in the play. Gordie, who is the prince in the play, can't stand obnoxious Lucy and dreads kissing her in the school play. Mr. Wilson, who is the computer teacher, spends a lot of time with Ms. Tingle, which leads the third graders to believe that their teacher is planning to get married in December and move to Ohio. Fearful that they might loose their favorite teacher, the children in room nine must come up with a plan. Lucy plots with Gordie and his friend Lamont. The suspense of finding out if their scheme will work or if Ms. Tingle will leave, keeps readers going. I read the book straight through just because I couldn't wait to find out how it ended. As a teacher, this would be a fun read aloud, especially to a group of third graders! |
