| PreS-Gr 1–Little Albertine's mom can make new outfits for dolls “in ten minutes flat.” Her Dad grows vegetables, and her brother is an expert soccer player. But what is Albertine's talent? Her attempts at gymnastics, swimming, and woodworking end in disaster and she concludes that these activities are not for her. The illustrations are in muted shades, and all the characters are stubby with the same pug noses and skinny legs. Albertine's short pigtails and freckles make her an endearing character. Although most of the story is predictable, children will enjoy seeing Albertine's funny attempts to try out her parents' suggestions. | I am a librarian who does storytime for toddlers and preschoolers. I am selective about the quality of books I read to the children. "Albertine's Got Talent!" makes the grade! I would recommend it for kids' personal libraries. It is one that can be enjoyed over and over again. The illustrations and text are excellent. Children can easily relate to this story about family and a child's self-actualization. With a good dose of humor, truth, and anticipation, kids fall in love with Albertine and her story. The illustrations are as much part of the story as the text. The pictures convey the tone, emotion, and action of the story and characters superbly. |
