PreSchool-Grade 1-Despite her mother's gentle reminder not to wander off, Little Raccoon follows a yellow leaf and loses her way in the dark. Feeling scared, she tries to work up courage for the trip home. Along the way, she is startled by various nocturnal creatures and grows more alarmed as a distant snapping and rustling noise gets closer. When she hears familiar chattering, she realizes that her mother has been following her tracks. Happily reunited, they head for their den and Little Raccoon vows to stay close to home. This story is a familiar one, and Wolf draws out the suspense and anxiety of the protagonist's plight. Children need reassurance that their parents will always find them; however, this version of that lesson is clouded by the fact that the mother seems to frighten rather than comfort her little one. A muted color palette and dry brush strokes are used to soften the slightly scary double-page nighttime scenes. For a more reassuring lost-and-found tale, stick with Jane Simmons's Come Along, Daisy! I gave this book to my niece (she was 3 at the time) for Christmas in 2006. I see my niece about once a month. Every time I visit I ask her to pick out her favorite book and tell me about it. Each time she chooses "Brave Little Raccoon." She knows the story intimately and absolutely loves it! This book has been a real hit! |
