Kindergarten-Grade 1-Nash's gouache-and-pencil illustrations are the star here as they depict elements of a day at the beach shared by four animal friends (they could be crocodiles or alligators). These creatively clad cohorts cavort through bright orange pages, leaving readers with no doubt as to the meaning of beach, nap, sun, and a bevy of related terms. "They pedaled/UP./They pedaled/DOWN./They looked for beach signs all around./They pedaled/UNDER./They pedaled/OVER./They/pedaled/in/a field/of clover." Sam, Pam, Will, and Jill also provide lots of opportunities to learn phonics, word patterns, and connections between ideas when the story is read aloud. A romp for the characters and readers alike.

Have an adventure just like Sam, Pam, Will, and Jill as you read this colorful picture book for the toddler and preschool set. It's a sweltering day in town and four alligator friends decide to ride to the beach. Of course they get lost along the way, but still end up having a ball of a time. The large, simple and slightly rhyming text flows easily and is balanced by bright cartoonish illustrations rendered in pencil and gouache. Children will have no problems getting sidetracked and lost with the alligator friends and will enjoy the rhythm of the text as the friends collectively form sentences through the interplay of their words. This is a wonderful book to share with young children, especially in a read-aloud situation. |
