| PreSchool-Grade 2-Two of the three ravens perched in a tree are complainers. They hate the snow, the cold, and everything else about winter. The third bird is quiet, curious, and thrilled by the children below making snow angels. Of course, he has to try to make one, too, and the story unfolds delightfully. Hechler's plot, weaving in some flights of fantasy and a strong message about creativity and trying new things, moves ahead with simple, rhythmic dialogue that captures the characters and invites reading aloud: "`Brrrrrrr,' whimpered the first raven. `Oh, woe,' whined the second one. The third raven didn't say anything at all." Muller's comical paintings blend seamlessly with the joyful story, creating a stark landscape expressionistically splashed with surprising hues. The feathers on the quirky ravens reflect a patchwork of color from the sun and moon, and the varying perspectives generate visual interest. Children will enjoy the gentle humor in both the text and pictures, and in the visual story line that overflows onto the endpapers. A beautiful book.

| While two ravens grumble and groan , the third remains quiet. Even as night and snow falls this steadfast bird seems to revel in the snow, and his quirky longing to interact with the children gives both them and him a special treat when the snow stops and the sun returns. The story is heartwarming and the paintings cannot help but make the reader smile. A book that everyone could snuggle up with on a cold winter night. |
