Overview / 简介: |
Appealing wordplay and autumnal colors lend warmth to this tiger tale. Peter, an orange cub with an upturned grin, wouldn't pick just any pumpkin: "Not a stumpy, grumpy pumpkin,/ but a sunny, sumptuous pumpkin." He chooses a bounteous specimen, carves it and wins a contest, for "Perfect pumpkins really do/ make perfect jack-o-lanterns, too." Serfozo's (Who Said Red?) stumbly, bubbly tongue-twisters complement Petrone's (Ducks in the Muck) adroit digital illustrations, which mimic paint swooshes of violet, harvest gold and orange. Peter is a charmer. Ages 3-6. |

"Peter's looking for a pumpkin, a perfect plumply, dumply pumpkin. Not a lumpy, bumpy pumpkin. Not a stumpy, grumpy pumpkin, but a sunny, sumptuous pumpkin." And given how gosh-darn cute Peter is--as gosh-darn cute as a young tiger can get, really--you'll instantly find yourself pulling for him as he goes out into the fields to get his gorgeous gourd.
But Peter's dramatic character arc doesn't really occur until he's got his perfect pumpkin in hand (or paw, rather): "Why does Peter want a pumpkin? Want a showy, glowy pumpkin?" Could it be for pumpkin pickles or pumpkin pie? Pumpkin pudding or pumpkin fry? Nope. He's soon drawing in eyes, and a chin, and "a plumply, dumply grin." Then with a little help from his dad (also quite cute, note the family resemblance), Peter proves that "perfect pumpkins really do make perfect jack-o'-lanterns, too."

This book is great for the 3 and under group because of the great rhyming text and bold and bright illustrations. Also great for read alouds. |
