I was suprised to see that this book had no reviews, what with Balto having an animated movie made in his honor (came out in 1995) and kids being crazed by dog culture in general. The book has great, woodcutter-style pics shaded with winter hues (that is the only way that I can explain it) that give the book a bold, rustic appeal. The prose straightfowardly relates the famous tale o' Balto; your kid gets the benefit of a history lesson without boredom ensuing. Details of Alaska's weather and the serum run leave your pulse racing...Balto makes it through, saving hundreds of lives from diphtheria. Now, can Clifford do that?
CliffNotes version of the Balto tale: There was a diphtheria outbreak in Nome in 1925. An antitoxin was dispatched from Anchorage via dogsled because Nome was icebound- the sea was frozen, the only planes in Alaska were dismantled, had open cockpits, and had unreliable engines in the winter cold; trains could not travel in the bad weather. Balto, fellow dogs, and the musher got the antitoxin to Nome before the outbreak could become a major epidemic. Balto was commemorated with a statue in Central Park. (Note: Some people feel that another dog, Togo, was the true hero of the whole ordeal, as he covered the longest and most dangerous leg of the trip.) |
