Did you know that there are crocodiles in the United States? If you said no, you are in good company because even Jim Arnosky didn't know that! There aren't many of them, but in the Everglades there are a few of them and they are very difficult to find. There are only about 2,000 crocodiles in the states and Jim and his wife Deanna thought they would go on their own counting expedition to see just how many they could find, but before they left they had to learn the difference between a crocodile and an alligator (he likes the "toothy smile" of the crocodile).
In this book you can travel on an alligator safari with the Arnoskys. The first ones they saw were in a "trash-filled mangrove creek." Jim called them Junkyard Dinosaurs. Then they saw one in a wildlife refuge on Sanibel Island. Jim didn't say, but I'm betting anything they saw that one at the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, but that's another story . . . at any rate, the reader can learn all about the American crocodile on this safari.
The artwork just signals adventure and children can count crocodiles right along with Jim and Deanna. A surprise bonus is the DVD called "In Crocodile Country" tucked in the back of the book. In this short twenty-two minute film we can travel with Jim and listen to him talk about the American Crocodile. At the end will show you how to draw both an alligator and a crocodile. He says "It's always fun to draw." I think he loves to sing too because he has a new song for us on this DVD. Now I think it's always fun to hear Jim sing! |
