My 8-year old son and I both enjoyed Missile Mouse #1. The story, action, and artwork that captivated our attention in the first book have carried over to the second installment of Missile Mouse "Rescue on Tankium3". The story stands alone, so don't worry about missing out on the fun if you didn't read the first Missile Mouse book (but my recommendation is to get both books for twice the reading pleasure). The main plot involves the Cosmic Cola empire (reminiscent of "the Spice must flow"). As in the first book, one of the subplots is how Missile Mouse works with his partner--developing trust at the beginning and then holding true to that trust in the heat of battle. Missile Mouse sees himself as a Lone Ranger, but his partner Robot 44 goes above and beyond the Galactic Security Agency programming to ensure Missile Mouse is able to save the day. It would be great if future books could further develop the relationship between Robot 44 and Missile Mouse. I envision Robot 44 being cast along the lines of Data in Star Trek the Next Generation or R2D2 in Star Wars--the Tin Man that embodies what is best about humanity. The last ten pages of the book are devoted to a guide to the Missile Mouse universe. There is enough extra detail that your young reader will spend extra time learning about the ins-and-outs of Missile Mouse's jet pack, Robot 44 internals, a Tankium home, and more.
A treat to read and a pleasant diversion from the usual diet of chapter books, the Missile Mouse series is recommended for boys interested in science fiction and adventure. We love to read this together, my son reading all the Missile Mouse and narrator lines and I reading the other characters' lines (I try to do the characters in different voices to elicit laughs or groans).
The binding, pages, and color of the first paperback printing are excellent quality. The thicker covers and glossy pages will survive many trips to and from school or library in a crowded book bag. |
