Grade 2-4-As in In 1492 (Scholastic, 1991), this author/illustrator collaboration shows that difficult concepts of history can be made understandable to young children. Bjorkman's watercolors steal the show here, as they give youngsters an authentic look at what it was like when the colonists rebelled against British rule. Architecture and artifacts are accurately portrayed. Colonial dress, military uniforms, and even King George's robes are rich in detail. Marzollo's verse, though sometimes stilted, is readable and carries the story along. A preface, "Helping Children Understand the American Revolution," gives background on our country's fight for independence. In 1776 deserves a place on most library shelves.

With spirited illustrations by Steve Bjorkman , Jean Marzollo penned a simple look at the American Revolution for very young readers that preschoolers will enjoy hearing over and over again.
The concepts presented here will provide an excellent basis for a greater understanding of the more complex issues studied in later years.
This is one of the best books I've seen on this subject for such young children. Highly recommended.

I have written over 130 books, including the award-winning, best-selling I SPY series for children, written completely in rhythm and rhyme. Rhythm and rhyme are like music without the tune; they lure and excite the ear. Children love rhythm and rhyme, and so do I. Do you know that I SPY actually has the same rhythm as "Old Mother Hubbard" and also rap? I treasure the beautiful, intricate photographs by Walter Wick in the I SPY books. When I wrote the first I SPY book, I automatically thought of kindergarten children so everything that I called for was concrete, something a 5-year-old can find. The result is a hunting game that children and grownups can play together successfully. Sometimes children are |
