Kindergarten-Grade 3—These 19 poems use different first-person narrators to explore the stigmas (and the benefits) of being short. Optimism reverberates heavily throughout the rhymes. One not-so-tall boy describes his talent for hitting home runs, while another's father solves a movie-viewing crisis with a few volumes of the encyclopedia. Many of the resolutions are too unrealistic to offer much comfort, such as when the school bully demands a boy's lunch money and mistakes Monopoly cash for the real thing. Colorful and textured illustrations add to the peppy text by featuring a diverse cast of children thoroughly enjoying sports, family, friends, and food in spite of the desire to be taller. This book may struggle to find an audience as those who are frustrated by their diminutive stature will find its relentless cheeriness dismissive and difficult to relate to.—Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA |
