Funny and totally gross!
Stella Min never gets scared. In fact, she’s pretty certain that she is the bravest one in the Monster Squad. But lately she can’t shake the feeling that she’s being watched—all the time! Soon she’s seeing floating eyeballs everywhere and quickly discovers it’s the Beast with 1000 Eyes. She knows she needs to stop it, but how do you kill a monster than can blink you to death?

| I bought all four of the Monster Squad books hoping my 8 year old would like them enough to pick them up and read them on his own - and it worked! He's now avidly reading book three and worried about if/when a fifth book will come out! In addition, his retelling of the story from The Slime That Would Not Die - and the great scary/funny cover art - interested my 6 year old son so much that now all three of us are reading the series together at bedtime.
The concept of four elementary school kids (two girls and two boys) banding together to fight a series of (not too) scary B monsters worked really well for my sons, and as a parent I appreciate that the Monster Squad defeats each monster using bravery and creative thinking, not high tech weaponry. The complexity of the stories and the vocabulary level required for independent reading is just right for strong 7 to 9 year old readers who want to read "chapter books." I think older readers wanting a quick read would like the too. There are also just enough clever illustrations scattered throughout each chapter - nicely supplementing the story without making your child feel like they're reading a "picture book."
Most importantly, the stories appeal to kids - my 8 year old says the stories are "exciting" and my 6 year old says, "I love hearing about all the B monsters."
If the subject matter appeals, then these books are highly recommended!
