| Kindergarten-Grade 3—This offering has a sweet, anti-materialistic message but is problematic on a number of levels. The weekend before Father's Day, a snail wants to find the perfect present for his dad. The youngster is not good at making things, and the cool neighborhood store has closed early. What is he to do? Langley discovers the best gift ever: spending time with Dad as they enjoy nature together. The text contains many long sentences and hyphenated phrases, such as "Amazing Auto-Select-Sports-Only Remote Control," making it difficult for inexperienced readers. Older children who can handle the text might think the cartoon-style illustrations, while pleasant and colorful, are babyish. Even as a read-aloud, the story demands careful listening skills. Additionally, the humor seems forced and uneven. The first half of the book is funnier than the second, and the first picture sets readers up for potty humor (Langley sits on a toilet) that never materializes. | This sweet, funny book is very colorful! Pages may be robins' egg blue, lavender or green, and the illustrations are bright and eye-catching. Langley Snail is upset thinking about what to make or get for his dad for Father's Day. One year he got his dad a paperweight. His dad is a mailman and doesn't have a desk. The artist's illustration depicts Mr. Snail walking his route with the paperweight on top of the mail cart! Langley's friends have purchased intriguing presents, but when Langley arrives at the store, it is closed. Sadly walking home, Langley spies a rock marked with a circle that his dad would consider good luck. He notices interesting things on his walk. Langley wraps the rock in a note which invites his dad on a Special Walk (P.S. Bring your camera). They enjoy the sights and their time together for the best Father's Day ever. |
