Monkey thought Elephant was his best friend. He was even bringing him some surprise cupcakes—and found a party going on that he wasn't invited to!
Elephant thought Monkey was his best friend. He was even planning a surprise wrestling party for him—but then Monkey put all his favorite toys in the freezer!
From there the war of revenge is on, and life on their small island is becoming dangerous! Until the townsfolk find a creative way to make Monkey and Elephant talk out their problems (cement shoes, a boat, and a chisel are involved . . .). Happily, Monkey and Elephant realize their fight was based on a misundersanding. But if only they had talked sooner, innocent teddies wouldn't need defrosting.
This is a laugh-out-loud comedy of a book with the helpful message that "using your words" is infinitely better than, say, painting a mean face on their butt. Show more Show less

The heavy-line cartoon illustrations populated by simple, rubber-limbed characters relate the instructive tale with pitch-perfect notes of humor and silliness that never approach the didactic."

There is a new genre of books being published these days, the children's graphic picture book. By that, I mean, a picture book geared toward the pre-K thru 2nd grade set that uses a comic format with individual panels and dialog bubbles to convey its narrative. Though, I have found that this type of book is not the best for reading a loud to a group of children. This book better serves to be read by an individual or adult/child. The illustrations are black line, simple, cartoon-like,yet detailed enough to understand some of the strong emotions.
On to what I think of the story!
It's a rather common problem that can happen between BFFs. Monkey goes to visit his friend Elephant to find that he's having a party. Monkey is shocked and hurt that he wasn't among the invited! So, instead of investigating further, he runs away crying and upset. After stewing for awhile, Monkey angrily decides to exact his revenge on Elephant by sneaking into his house and putting his toys in the freezer. Of course, then Elephant later discovers them after reading a sign left by his "Ex-Best Friend Monkey". From there, the battle is on when Elephant retaliates and so on. Young children will giggle at the sight of a sleeping Elephant getting a happy face painted on his rear end.
Eventually, the fighting and tricks get to be so out of hand that the other beleaguered animals decide to step in. Kids may relate to misunderstandings that friends can have which results in hurt feelings. Or, when two of their friends argue or fight while they just want everyone to get along. To think it could have all been avoided had Monkey simply knocked on the door! |
