| PJ Picklelime copes with her parents' separation and the death of a friend with help from her animal friends and several supportive adults. In a village where “summers are hot and dreamy,” nearly everyone practices alternative lifestyles, and those who help animals can speak to them. PJ's first encounter with loss happens when the warbler who lived in her bushy black hair flies south. Saying she needs a big sister, her gardening neighbor Mrs. Patel introduces her to 13-year-old Ruth, who rescues baby animals. With their owls and gulls, the two discover and chase off a local bird thief. After Ruth dies suddenly, the second half of the book chronicles the devastated PJ's spiritual quest as she consults adults from a variety of religious backgrounds to find out what happens after death. Though the setting is dreamy and there are touches of magic realism, PJ's problems are distinctly real-world. This debut children's novel by a teacher of oriental medicine will appeal to families who share her alternative values of conscious living. Grades 4-7. |

| I pre-ordered this wonderful book for my 10 year old niece purely on the strength of its advance publicity. I was not disappointed. In fact, after reading and enjoying it myself, I was surprised the publisher had not sufficiently emphasized its contemporary theme and characterizations. The author, Pamela Ellen Ferguson, speaks directly to the Now Generation; adolescents who readily use computers, flip cams, cell phones and the Internet. She confronts in beautiful prose and enduring life lessons, the dilemmas and confusion this generation of readers face as they navigate into adulthood. This is a modern tale of intergenerational and interracial friendship, of respect for our world and those who inhabit it. Told in delightful language and peppered with characters, both animal and human, the pages are filled with a story that is both magical and fundamental. I hope this is the first in a series. My niece and I can't wait for PJ's next adventure. |
