Kindergarten-Grade 3—The residents of a crumbling, crowded apartment building gather on their idyllic rooftop garden to share food, music, and friendly conversation. There is a diverse cast of characters—Frenchie and Horty from Paris, Mr. Carriero from Italy, Curly and Touz, and Dick and Gene—but only one little girl with "cabbage-curly hair." With her family and all of her neighbors sharing this "House of Joyful Living," she feels like she is on top of the world. But as Mama's belly grows, she fears that, once the baby arrives, no one will pay attention to her. Aided by Widener's bold, expressive acrylics, Schotter paints a nostalgic picture of the warmth and joy of a close-knit, urban community and one little girl's realization of the blessings a new baby will bring. With a focus on community and neighborliness, this is a unique, though not essential, addition to the new-sibling bookshelf.—Rachel Kamin, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, Highland Park, IL

She was a little round girl with "cabbage-curly hair." It was a lucky thing to be living in such a happy home and building. It wasn't really a nice building so to speak, because "the brick was crumbling" and the "paint was peeling," but it was a wonderful place to live. They called it "the House of Joyful Living." On the building's rooftop was a magical place with all kinds of plants, stone sculptures that Mr. Carriero carved (he was from "EE-taly"), a goldfish pond and a wonderful view of New York City. The building had people from many lands and that made it extra special.
On Sundays they got to eat some special foods like challah bread, pickled herring and tuna salad. There was special music and Frenchie, who was from "Pa-ree," made her paper birds named "wah-zoh" that "flapped when you pulled on them." The House of Joyful Living was such a special place. Someone extra special was growing in Mama's belly and it was getting crowded when she sat on her lap. In spite of everything, the thought that she would have to share with this new baby was upsetting her. The tears began to fall. Everyone would ignore her and she thought to herself, "I want everything for myself." This was a big dilemma and the word "joyful" wasn't going to be in their house once that baby came around! What was going to happen to her?
The arrival of a new baby can spell crisis to an older child, but when a book like this is read to him or her, it has a tendency to ease their fears and reassure them that they always have had and will continue to have a special place in the family. The charming mix of people and love in the House of Joyful Living makes this tale especially endearing. The gorgeous art work meshes perfectly with this work. This story, based on the life of the author, is definitely a keeper! |
