Grade 1–3—Crowley's perfectly rhymed narrative about an accidental adventure is both minimal and evocative, and Day's watercolor and line illustrations turn some very funny text into a hilarious book. Two boys so wrapped up in furry hooded jackets that only a pair of round spectacles distinguishes one from the other drill a hole in the center of an ice floe. "Hi, Nanook/Morning, Pryce/Baiting hooks/Drilling ice." A bird tries to steal one of the worms as the wiggly creatures watch in horror. Calmly looking on from the water are a mother polar bear and her cub. In the following pages, the boys remain remarkably focused on fishing as they're towed away by whales, caught in a lobster net, frozen into ice cubes, and so on. Only their dog, Yukon, reacts to the terrible dangers of their voyage around the globe. When the little ice floe sails safely back into its jigsaw-cutout space, the boys return home to their igloo, to sleep. Yukon curls up with the can of exhausted worms tucked into his curly tail. The spreads are packed with visual jokes: a large undersea oyster shell contains a bowling ball, a penguin holds an umbrella, worms wear life vests, and more. This story will delight readers.—Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY

Nanook and Pryce were out on an ice floe getting ready to fish. One was drilling a hole in the ice while the other was getting ready to bait the hooks. A polar bear and her cub were lazily looking on while a bird decided it was going to take a worm out of the can when they weren't looking. The two of them and their husky were "floating free," but then they started to move right along when a killer whale tangled her fin in their lines while she was swimming along with her baby. They were still adrift when a large group of puffins went under their floe as they were catching fish. Plop, plop . . . Nanook and Pryce each tossed a fish to a couple of puffins. A BIG wave carried them away from the puffins and the bass.
Their little floe was still adrift and they calmly fished away. "Round and round. Warning barks. Fearless hound. Scaredy sharks." Yukon was very smug when he drove them away. That wasn't the only problem they would run into. A lobster net caught them up in its nets, but they didn't even flinch and continued to fish. The net came unglued and they plopped back into the ocean. They had drifted so far they ended up in a tropical ocean far from home, but they kept on fishing as the dolphins broke the surface of the water over a treasure laden ocean floor. Was anything going to get these two devoted fishermen from their work?
This is a comical little story in rhyme that will make your little one laugh. By hook or by crook Nanock and Pryce are so interested in fishing that absolutely nothing will tear them away from their time together. The pages are not overwhelmed by words and the little story can almost be "read" without them. On the end pages is a map where you can see how the two fisherman and their dog Yukon circumnavigated the globe on their one day fishing excursion. Of course they were so oblivious as to what was around them, they didn't even notice the dangers. This is simply a fun little adventure that will make you chuckle, but if you have a couple of fisherman in the family it will make you roar! |
