Children's Literature After a long sea voyage, Oliver the elephant gets off the boat and learns that he doesn't have a job in the circus. He heads out seeking employment first at the zoo and then as a peanut vendor. Neither works out, so he tries being a pet. Finally Oliver heads to the park where he meets a group of kids. After playing awhile, they all contemplate what they would like to do. Oliver, who wants to be a dancing elephant, starts to strut his stuff. He is so good that people don't pay attention to the passing circus parade. Finally Oliver gets the job that he wants and deserves. The text is simple and the illustrations are a delight, but the book is a bit long for kids just starting to read. An "I Can Read Book" Level 1 for preschool to grade 1. 2000 (orig. 1960), HarperTrophy, $14.95, and $3.95. Ages 4 to 6. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot |
